Recreational Angling Ireland’s Fishing Day hooks 18 first time anglers
A free Recreational Angling Ireland (RAI) fishing event was hosted recently by the Mount Falcon Estate in Co. Mayo. The event which was supported by the North Western and Central Fisheries Boards provided an introduction to angling for the 18 novice participants.
The day began with the group receiving some basic instruction on angling and fly-fishing. A talk was given by Paddy Byrne, RAI, on the appropriate clothing to wear and how to stay safe around the water. The talk also emphasized the need to wear protective gear such as hats and glasses while fishing. The children were then given a practical session on the tying of knots which also explained why and how these knots are used.
Following the tuition, each participant was encouraged to set up their own rod before they could take to the lake for casting lessons and some fishing. Much of the afternoon was spent fishing for rainbow trout and although many fish could be seen only five were hooked during the day.
On the day, Paddy Byrne, secretary of RAI commented “we are delighted with the response and support from the both the children and their parents for this event. I am confident that these young anglers will carry forward their learning from this angling day and that they will continue to participate in the sport of angling for many years to come. I am sure that there are many clubs and fisheries locally that would be delighted to welcome these new angling recruits”.

Notes to Editor:
Recreational Angling Ireland (RAI) was established by the major national angling organisations in Ireland, who came together to examine if it was possible for them to work in the future on common objectives and issues.
The primary role of RAI is to provide a focus for the recreational sector to work together on common issues that are best tackled in a coordinated way rather than each organisation going it alone. It seeks to provide a mechanism for development of common policies and services, which helps to strengthen the sector.
It will seek to develop or secure access to a range of appropriate training services, which will be relevant to the member organisations and their members in turn.
It will aim to work with key agencies to provide a co-ordinated response to relevant issues and to raise the profile and views of member organisations on agreed areas. The aim will be to work through a process of consensus and respect.
It will not get involved in work or functions which are already the primary responsibility of existing recreational angling organisations.
The Central Fisheries Board (CFB) is a statutory body operating under the aegis of the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and was established under the Fisheries Act 1980.
Its principal functions are to advise the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources on policy relating to the conservation, protection, management, development and improvement of inland fisheries and sea angling, to co-ordinate and provide specialist and support services to the Regional Fisheries Boards and to advise the Minister on the performance by the Regional Fisheries Boards of their functions.
