Fly Fishing for rainbow trout

October 2008

Rathcon Fishery

Once again the elements chose not to be kind to us. Rain and wind in buckets were to great us at Rathcon. The students were all beginners, so after running through equipment and knots in the lodge, we finally had to done our waterproofs and brave the conditions.

Thanks to the strong wind most had no trouble casting. Lunch and some drip drying back in the lodge. Then an afternoon facing the elements in an attempt to catch trout.

Several fish were hooked but managed to avoid being netted. Some of the group were starting to loose belief that the fishery had any fish, when finally we managed to land a fully finned trout of some 2lbs + Not the best of days by any means and hard fishing conditions. However all left with broad smiles that would suggest another group have been converted!

Staff – Mark Corps (CFB), Ashley Hayden (ERFB), Paddy Byrne (RAI).
Group – 12 students and 5 guardians.
